The Sierra Leone International Model United Nations is a non-profit organization registered as a youth-serving agency under the National Youth Commission, with its aim to develop, promote, and actualize strategized ideals and principles that address the ills of our political landscape, underdeveloped economy, un-weaving disrespect for humanity and poor democratic practices in attaining national development in the Sierra Leone communities.

In 2018 and 2019, we organized two distinct International Model United Nations Conferences where young people from across the world converged in Freetown, and served as delegates, representing different UN member states to debate on continental and world issues and proffer pragmatic resolutions to global challenges.

In partnership with the Chinese Embassy, we have sent two young Sierra Leoneans (a male and a female) who served as delegates at our conference, to attend a one-month high-profiled seminar in China in 2019. 

In 2020 we served as a partner organization to the United Nations in Sierra Leone in conducting a nationwide survey for the UN 75years commemoration (UNGA 75), collecting data from young people across Sierra Leone on their views of the successes and failures of the Sustainable Development Goals implementation in our communities.

In 2021, we also organized an online Model UN conference that hosted over 500 youth from across the world and had influential speakers including Mr Frisco McDonald the then Economic Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Freetown who delivered a speech on “Creativity, Cultural and Capital: Impact investing in the global creative economy”.

In 2022, we organized a National Youth Dialogue Forum, where we trained 96 youth (peace ambassadors), who served as emissaries in engaging on actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation in the effort to intentionally educate the youthful population on Civic Education and leadership, Youth Participation in development cohesion and, Cultural and Gender Equity in the Sierra Leone communities.

Our Goals are:

• To improve on the values and importance of Cultural Exchange programs in ensuring sustainable development in True Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law, Equality and Inclusion for all, Non-Discrimination, good Economic Reforms, and advancement in Sierra Leone.

• To cultivate the right Youth Leadership with an effective, distinct, and result-oriented mindset.

• To Erect a permanent platform that young people can use to discuss international affairs and become active players in nation-building.

• Established a Think Tank forum where in upcoming leaders (youth) can proffer solutions to the current global predicaments in a modernized approach.

Our Objectives:

• Promote respect for cultural diversity.

• Strengthen cultural ties between the United States and Sierra Leone.

• Promote Civic Education and Youth Leadership among youth.

• Developed pragmatic strategies on how to handle roadblocks in governance, economics, justice, and humanities.

• Foster and raise awareness of globalization and respect for all and sundry.

• Identify, promote, and network with global minds regardless of their gender, ability or disability, culture, beliefs, or political affiliation.

• Train and network model diplomats so they can harness economic opportunities and develop their careers.

• Establish a platform where youth add value to each other, where dreamers are raised and promoted, where dreams are revived and people are helped to discover their purpose, and where young leaders are spotlighted and networked.

• Increase awareness and boost interest and confidence in international affairs, diplomacy, and respect for culture and humanity.

• Ensures our youth have a shift in their mentality with regard to strategizing innovative ideas to solve the ills of society.

• Develop the mindset of the young generation in preparing them for any global assignment.

• Advocate for the enhancement of human rights and safe environmental practices.

• Promote a culture of peace among youth by fostering friendship.

We believe that the best way to get the youth to participate in the effort to establish peace and sustainable development is by training and providing them the necessary skills required so that they can become more tolerant; perfect in developing cohesion; and effective and efficient leaders of national and international institutions.

 

It is very important to ensure the youth clearly understand the principles and values upon which the peace and advancement of a nation is propelled.
